A King's Gift to His People

Welcome to your first step! Before we learn the letters, let's learn the story. In the 15th century, most Koreans were unable to read or write because the writing system (based on Chinese characters) was too complex.

King Sejong the Great, a wise and compassionate ruler, wanted to change this. He and his scholars created a new alphabet called Hangul (한글). It was designed to be incredibly easy to learn, so that anyone, from a farmer to a noble, could become literate. He truly created a gift for everyone.

Designed with a System

Hangul isn't just a random collection of shapes. It's a scientific system where the letters mimic the shape of your mouth when you make the sound! Let's see some basic examples. Hover over the cards to reveal the sound.

ㄱ
"g/k" sound

(Tongue to back of throat)

ㄴ
"n" sound

(Tongue to roof of mouth)

ㅁ
"m" sound

(Shape of closed lips)

ㅅ

(Shape of teeth)

Your First Step is Complete!

You now understand the incredible history and logic behind Hangul. It's not just an alphabet; it's one of the most scientific and easy-to-learn writing systems in the world. This is why you'll be able to read it much faster than you think!

In the next lesson, we will start learning the basic vowels and consonants one by one. Get ready!
